Cover Me!

This past week something really exciting happened…I got a cover for Duchess!!! Look how beautiful it is:
In my daydreams of covers for Duchess, I always imagined half of a young girl’s face dressed in a Baroque fashion with a tall, white wig and sunglasses on. I never imagined my actual cover would come so close to my dream cover! So how did this dream come true?
Because Trifecta Books ROCKS and works closely with their authors to make sure both sides are happy. But of course there’s more to the process than that. First there must be a concept. I mentioned my concept to the cover artist which began a flurry of emails back and forth and many visits to some royalty-free stock photo sites. Of course nothing came exactly close to what I wanted. But we soon found a picture of a young girl in baroque fashion and tall, whitish hair. All she needed was sunglasses! So we found another picture of a woman wearing the right kind of sunglasses. After both pictures were purchased by the publishing company it was time to make the dream a reality.
The sunglasses were cropped out of the one picture and placed onto the face of the girl with the fan. They were sized and then all the unwanted parts of the sunglasses were erased. Next, we put in a drop shadow under the glasses. To add a personal touch, if you look closely, you can see a faded version of this image in the reflection of the sunglasses:
Then the cover artist did her magic by softening the picture, adding the title, author’s name, and even the idea of a tag line.
I’d like to say I was the perfect little author and didn’t ask her to change the font at least three times on my name. Once I even suggested she make my name in lower case, to which she put her foot down and said it wasn’t professional. She reminded me of this character on the Incredibles:
When she said “NO LOWERCASE!” LOL! I figured Edna was right about the whole “no capes” thing, so I trusted my cover artist and she was completely right!!
So a great big thank you to Trifecta Books, Tristi Pinkston, and my wonderful cover artist, Jenni James!!!
